The River Kwai Festival

Chulalongkorn Day sees the start of the spate of festivals that run through until the Songkhran peak next April. In six months Thailand has its high season of public holidays and festivals. Such events as the Chiangmai Flower Festival, Loi Krathong, Yasothon Rocket Festival I and Chinese New Year are found within this period and the celebrations kick off with a full 10-day festival at the River Kwai Bridge in Kanchanaburi in the last week of November, leading up to His Majesty the King's birthday on December 5.

The annual festival is aimed at increasing awareness for a peaceful future. What better location?

A party atmosphere prevails and amongst the many exhibits and shows is the nightly son et lumiere extravaganza at the infamous bridge. Complete with fake air attacks and explosions with lots of fireworks, the upgraded sound and light show has commentaries in various languages available in grandstand seating on the riverside.

Special trains run from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station during this period and a special steam train excursion usually takes visitors on the last day of the festival. Nowadays, the idea is to book early as it is an immensely popular event. On the bonus side is that travel to and from Bangkok has improved dramatically over the past few years and an overnight in Kanchanaburi is no longer a necessity.

Don't expect to see the thick vegetation or rocky waters from which Sir Alec Guiness saw "his" bridge over the River Kwai - that's in Sri Lanka, where the movie was made portrayed in the film - and a beautiful spot indeed.

It's a good time for the festival as the scenery is a lush green at this time, conflicting with the yellow ochre to be found in April.

What you will see is the real thing and for those not having been before, the Death Museum is certainly sparse and a little tacky in parts, but it is full of the articles, photos and reports from the days of the war; simply a museum with the genuine article and with no pizzazz.

Naturally, don't miss the train trip. The best departure is the 1055 from Kanchanaburi and a good idea during festival time is to board at the town station rather than at the bridge. Here one can pay bht 200 for a guaranteed seat including coffee and cookies and receive a Death Railway Certificate. It's probably overpriced but during this busy period it's worth the extra baht or so. The prisoners of war built wooden viaducts that never cease to amaze as the train hugs the cliff face high above the Kwai. I'm sure that over the last few years the train service has actually become slower at this stage of the journey, down to about 5km an hour. You'll understand why when you hear the wood creaking below you. The 75 minute trip from Kanchanaburi town to Nam Tok (waterfall) at the end of the line is scenic and even when reaching the terminal, one is still 350km from Moulmein, the original terminus for this important supply route. Vegetation has long reclaimed the old track route and the workers' camps along the rest of the line. At Nam Tok you are on the edge of the Burma foothills and from here to 3 Pagodas Pass is real border jungle country.

An introduction to this can be found by taking an overnight excursion from Pakbeng pier, near to Nam Tok station, to the River Kwai jungle Rafts or Resotel. The latter is situated next to the King Lawa limestone caves and is an upmarket cottage version of the original rafts. The rafts are great for a one night experience on the river and although a little sparse with no electricity or hot water, it's a back woods feel that can be maintained for at least one night by those in search of something a little different. There are no mosquitoes prevalent because of the fast flowing River Kwai and with the rafts only being accessible by boat it is given a little more of the pioneering excursion value. The local Mon tribe pretty well do all the staff work and elephant trekking as well as old fashioned walking is the order of the day.

The rafts are tethered to the bank and walkways are available for those wanting to go off into the forest. Many simply opt for tubing down the river. No need to swim, the current simply takes you. Food is inventive and tasty and at around bht 1300/night including all meals it's a worthwhile experience of up-country Thailand and also a way to see what those prisoner of war workers had to break through to build that railway.

Best Beach Destinations in the United States

Regardless of which coast you decide to visit, there are an amazing amount of high quality beaches in the United States. The people on the west coast might be known for taking it a bit slower and enjoying life a little more, but once you get to the beach on the east coast, that fast-paced and rushed lifestyle immediately goes out the window. Whether it’s the beach, the horizon, the sand, or some other unknown factor, east coast beaches have some form of tranquilizing effect. You have an urge to relax the instant you get there.

If you like to relax on white sandy beaches while looking at a crystal clear ocean and the most beautiful people in the world, then your first stop should definitely be South Beach, which is located in Miami, Florida. This beach took over as the most popular spring break destination about a decade ago, only in this case, the party never ends. Expect to see a younger crowd. And if you’re not into relaxing, then jet skiing and socializing are also popular activities.

If you travel up the coast just a few hours, you will reach Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The beaches here are known for their cleanliness as well as the promenade at Lauderdale Beach and walkable dunes at Hollywood Beach. Beachgoers range from families to college kids.

Travel north to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for an active beach atmosphere. It’s ironic that South Carolina is where you will find one of the most active beaches, but it’s probably the most active and fast-paced area in the state. There are all types of hotels and resorts flanking the beach. This is a place you go for action, not sanctuary. It’s a popular beach for families as well as college kids and senior citizens.

If you keep traveling north, you will hit Virginia Beach. This is another active area, where scuba diving, waterskiing, cycling and running are all very popular. There is also a boardwalk that stretches for miles.

If you like water parks, haunted houses, funnel cakes, pizza, and novelty shops while being only steps away from the ocean, then Wildwood, New Jersey is where you want to be. This is a very family-oriented area with an emphasis on good-natured fun. If you have a family and love the beach, this is highly recommended.

Are you more of the laid back type who enjoys fishing and/or eating at restaurants that overlook the ocean? If that’s the case then you should check out Montauk, New York. Montauk is at the farthest point on Long Island and over two hours away from the hustle and bustle of New York City. It is also the epitome of a beach town.

If you’re looking for rocky beaches for picnics and sightseeing, then just keep heading up the coast to Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Acadia National Park has some of the most beautiful views in the continental United States.

If you live on or plan on visiting the east coast, it’s hopeful that one of the beaches listed matches what you’re looking for.

Mauritius wildlife

Mauritius is a beautiful island boasting rare and interesting wildlife. From the colourful fish inhabiting the coral reefs to the giant turtles roaming the land, to the beautiful birds that command the air, nature lovers will be in awe on a Mauritius holiday.

Animals on the Island

Being an island, the majority of wildlife resident in Mauritius (with the exception of mammals) are endemic, and you can expect to see a range of interesting animals on your holidays in Mauritius. If you find bats interesting, you will be pleased to learn that fruit bats are the only mammals endemic to the island. Unlike other smaller bats, fruit bats have an enormous wing span (nearly a metre), and to make their appearance even more regal, they have a golden orange colour around their head and shoulders, like a halo or a crown. You won't be likely to spot one of the amazing creatures during the day on your Mauritius holiday because they nest in the gorges and on the mountainside, but you could spot them flying past you at night.

Other mammals you may spot whilst on your Mauritius holiday are Javan deer, forest monkeys and feral pigs. While these mammals may not be endemic to the island, they are interesting to see nonetheless.

One of the oldest creatures to inhabit the island is the giant tortoise, having lived on the island in for over a hundred years; these creatures should be respected and revered when on your Mauritius holiday. The tortoises really are giant, with a length of up to a metre and weight up to 250kg. Other reptiles you could spot on holidays in Mauritius are the day-gecko, and skinks, which may be smaller, but are colourful and interesting to look at.

In the Waters

In the Indian Ocean waters which surround the island, a whole host of colourful creatures may be found. Tuna, marlin, barracuda, shark and sailfish swim this region of the ocean, fished by the locals and used to create delicious fresh seafood dishes which you can enjoy at your Mauritius hotel. The coral reef surrounding the island is also home to an array of sponges, sea anemones and spikey, making diving an excellent activity on any Mauritius holiday. As you dive into the warm waters, you will be amazed at the colourful clown and box fish, trumpet, lionfish and stonefish that swim by.

It is important to remember that the coral reef is protected by the Mauritius Marine Conservation Society, and collecting shells and coral on your holiday in Mauritius may seem appealing, but it is depleting the natural environment, and the activity has been banned from the beaches.

Birds of the Air

Whilst birdlife in Mauritius is the object of conservationists, the Mauritius kestrel, pink pigeon and emerald-green echo parakeet have happily been saved from extinction, and you could be lucky enough to spot these colourful birds on your Mauritius holiday. Other interesting and more commonly-sighted birds include fly-catchers, bulbuls and white-eyes, and you're likely to spot these feathered creatures on holiday in Mauritius.

Island Vegetation

For nature lovers Mauritius holidays could prove to be inspirational, with some fascinating vegetation to be discovered. One of the most beautiful and rarest plants in the world is the Mandrinette, which is a pretty pink or colour. You can walk through the Black River Gorges National Park, where tropical plants and excellent views await you.
