Blackpool is famous for many things like the Blackpool Tower and Circus, the Pepsi Max Big One at the Pleasure Beach and the historic tramway. However, it is theBlackpool Illuminations and the Festival of Light that is the resort’s biggest attraction.
Blackpool Illuminations shine each year for 66 nights from late August or early September to early November. They light up 6 miles (10km) of the promenade. It is an incredibly spectacular sight and one which is enjoyed by both young and old. The display stretches from Starr Gate at the south end of the town to Bispham in the north.
There are many options for seeing Blackpool lights. You can, of course, drive yourself but a popular way to see the Illuminations is by Tram. You will find that Illuminated Trams form part of the display and provide tours that run the full length of the Illuminations. Another option is the Illuminations Coach Tour where you can sit back and enjoy a fun-filled journey through the lights with expert commentary, behind-the-scenes secrets and illuminating facts, all provided by your personal Illuminations Guide.
The Illuminations are far more than just a display of lights. You have to see it for yourself to really appreciate the experience. There are indeed many coloured lights but they are arranged in many formats providing a constantly moving and changing display. There are some sections which are best seen on foot as they are made up of illuminated panels providing an entertaining picture show. There are also laser light displays which will amaze you. Some of the illuminations tell a story and even incorporate music and water fountains to provide the most impressive of shows.
If you have visited the Blackpool Illuminations in the past, you might think you’ve seen it all before but you would be mistaken. Every year, there are new sections added and they are always bigger and better and more spectacular than ever before. The existing Illuminations are re-arranged and improved upon each year so there is always something new and exciting.
There is a lot to see and do in Blackpool during the illuminations. The opening night is always very busy as there is a ceremony which attracts a huge number of visitors. The Illuminations are always switched on by a big celebrity and there is an open-air concert leading up to the event. October half term is another extremely popular time to see the Illuminations so, if you want to visit during those busy times, you do need to book your accomodation early.
Blackpool is a resort that has a lot to offer so it is has always been a popular destination for summer holidays. However, as Blackpool Illuminations are staged in the Autumn when most other seaside resorts are closing for business, it is also a popular destination for Autumn breaks. During the Illuminations, all of Blackpool’s attractions are very much open for business and you will find there are many shows and events to entertain you. A visit to Blackpool Illuminations is not to be missed and will provide a wonderful, vibrant and thrilling experience for everyone.
